Dangal is a traditional wrestling tournament popularly known as kushti. In this tournament, the participants are mostly men. Generally, no women participate in the competition. But there is somebody who is beating men at their own game. Divya Kakran, a 17 year old girl, challenges boys to wrestle with her and leaves them pinned to the ground.
This young Delhi-based wrestler who hails from a lower-middle class family knows how difficult is it to earn a living. Her first visit to a dangal was at the age of seven, and for the last nine years, she is regularly taking part in dangals against men to earn money.
Though Divya is not the first female wrestler in the country, but she is the first one that challenges men and defeats them all. “Many girls have taken part in dangals. I have seen a few challenge men. But those were one-off cases. None of them have fought in as many dangals as Divya. Fighting boys isn’t just a gimmick for her. She beats them all,” says accountant Deepak Anusiya Prasad to The Indian Express.
