‘When are you settling down?‘ or ‘What are your plans for having kids?‘
These are some random questions that every pesky neighbourhood aunty asks the girls. Most of us have heard such questions, when you are single people ask when are you getting married, when married they ask when will they hear the good news and it goes on.
Girls, you are not alone in this. World number one in Tennis women’s doubles, Sania Mirza, is also often asked such questions. She launched her autobiography, Ace Against Odds, at the young age of 29, which itself is an achievement. When in an interview Rajdeep Sardesai asked her about settling down, she had the best response.
Rajdeep’s words were, “Amidst all the celebrityhood, when is Sania going to settle down? Is it going to be in Dubai? Is it going to be in another country? What about motherhood? Building a family? I don’t see that in the book. It seems like you don’t want to retire yet to settle down.”
To which the reply she gave won our hearts. She said, “You sound disappointed that I’m not choosing motherhood over being number one in the world at this point of time. But I’ll answer your question anyway, that’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that all women have to face – the first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we don’t become settled. But eventually it will happen, not right now. And when it does happen I’ll be the first one to tell everybody when I plan to do that.”
Though Rajdeep apologised for what he had said but get over marriage and settling down. She is a great player, an inspiration to aspiring sports persons and world number one respect her and her decisions. We are proud of her and girl you know how to handle such things.
