Food is a basic need for all living beings. We need food and water to survive. When one has to fast for a single day we feel as if we are going through the biggest struggle of our life. We cannot think of a life without food and water for a day. But what if you did not had anything for 15 years? Is it too much?
Irom Chanu Sharmila is a lady who is on hunger strike for 15 years. You do not believe but this is a fact. She has been fasting from 2nd Nov, 2000 when she was 28 years old. This is the longest duration for which an individual has held the hunger strike in the world.
She decided to protest as incidents of torture and killings were common in Manipur and in the veil of the powers under AFSPA, nothing could be done against security personnel. After some local civilians were killed by the Assam Riffles who were waiting for bus she started her hunger strike and has only one demand, Repeal AFSPA.
Irom Sharmila, often called as The Iron Sharmila, is the most recognizable face of the conflict-ridden state. She has refused food and water but government but continues to forcefeed her. They arrest her every year accusing her of attempt to suicide. But Irome is determined to do what needs to be done. She is determined for the cause she is standing for.
She is a woman of strong will and dedication towards her cause. She wants that situation should get better in Manipur. She is fighting for the people of Manipur, for the rights of local people. She wants them to have an equal status as every Indian of the country.
It is this strong will and hunger for justice that she is been on hunger strike for 15 years and still fighting. She has received support from all around the world. Many national and international groups including United Nations have asked to withdraw the AFSPA but it still prevails and so does Irome Sharmila’s struggle.
We salute this Iron Lady and pray for her well being. Also she is an inspiration to all of us, making us believe no matter how many difficulties you face be determined about what you want and stand for the just!!
